The Greatest Buddies

The Greatest Buddies

The Great Sphinx, which stands magnificently next to the Great Pyramid in Giza, Egypt, is an ancient stone statue. The statue has a head of a man, which measures thirteen feet across, and is believed to be modeled after King Khafres. Although the head is of a man, the body is in the shape of a lion. The Great Sphinx is 240 feet wide and towers at 60 feet tall. Because the statue sits in the desert, it sadly has been eroded by sand, wind, and time. Since the 1800s, it has been covered neck high in sand four times. Although they have to unbury it, it still remains mostly intact. The Great Pyramid and the Great Sphinx have been sitting next to each other for 4,000 years, and hopefully they will sit next to each other for another 4,000.

Gladiators

Ancient Roman citizens watched gladiators in a very gruesome sport. Bravely, gladiators fought to the death in fights that took place in the amphitheater. There were two types of people who participated in the fights, those who volunteered and those who were forced.  Criminals, slaves and war prisoners were forced. Murderers were even forced to fight without any weapon at all! The volunteer gladiators, who were trained by the emperor, fearlessly entered the arena. Who or what did they fight? Bears, lions, crocodiles, and even each other!  After admitting defeat, the crowd decided the gladiators fate. Thumbs toward him meant keep him alive. And thumbs pointing away from him, meant he was to be killed. Gladiators who were successful in winning were considered Roman heroes. This may have seemed cruel, but the Roman people enjoyed watching this repugnant sport.

My CC Essay

Lia Martinez
The History Of The Roman Government

Rome went through three distinct stages. The first was a monarchy. It seemed like the kings would rule indefinitely, but their power came to a halt in 520 B.C.. The second stage was ruled by the Senate, which had to be made of noblemen, then later made of Plebeians. The third was emperor ruled. There was a senator that stood out from all the others, he was named Julius Caesar. The people liked him so much that they made him emperor, and he gained absolute power. The Senate, who had little power, killed Julius Caesar. The Senate thought that Caesar’s death would cease the rule of emperors but it didn’t. It lasted till 476 AD. And those are the three ages of the Roman Government.

I think of all the little thing,
as I walk by the crystal bay,
